Service Dog vs Companion Dog

Clearing the confusion - and why it matters in India

Terms like service dog, assistance dog, therapy dog and companion dog are often used interchangeably. They are not the same thing, and the difference matters.

Understanding the distinction helps set realistic expectations and avoids confusion, especially as assistance dogs are still a relatively new concept in India. Here's a plain guide to what each term actually means.

What is a service or assistance dog?

A service dog, more commonly called an assistance dog in many countries, is individually trained to perform specific tasks that reduce the impact of a person's disability. These tasks are directly related to the handler's disability. For example, an assistance dog may:

  • Guide a person who is blind
  • Alert a person who is deaf to important sounds
  • Retrieve dropped items for someone with limited mobility
  • Respond during a seizure or diabetic emergency
  • Interrupt panic attacks or harmful behaviours

The dog is not simply providing comfort. It has been specifically trained to perform practical tasks that help its handler live more independently.

What is a companion dog?

A companion dog is primarily kept for friendship, affection and emotional wellbeing. Living with a dog can reduce loneliness, encourage exercise, improve routine and provide comfort during difficult times. These benefits are real and well documented. However, a companion dog has not been individually trained to perform disability-related tasks in the way an assistance dog has.

Many family pets are wonderful companions, but that alone does not make them assistance dogs.

How they differ

Factor Assistance Dog Companion Dog
Purpose Trained tasks related to a disability Friendship and emotional support
Training Extensive and structured Basic obedience for family life
Placement Carefully matched to one individual Chosen primarily as a pet
Expectations Must work reliably in any situation Not expected to perform specialised tasks

What about emotional support animals?

An emotional support animal provides comfort simply through its presence. Unlike an assistance dog, it is not required to perform specific trained tasks related to a disability. Many countries treat emotional support animals differently from assistance dogs in law and public access rights. In India, there is currently no clear legal framework recognising emotional support animals in the way that some other countries do.

Why this distinction matters in India

Because assistance dogs are still uncommon in India, many people assume any well-behaved dog accompanying a person with a disability is an assistance dog. Others may describe their pet as a service dog simply because it provides comfort. While these misunderstandings are understandable, they create confusion for the public, businesses and healthcare professionals.

Using the correct terms helps build trust in genuine assistance dog programmes and makes it easier for people to understand the specialised training involved.

Can a companion dog become an assistance dog?

Sometimes, but not always. An assistance dog needs the right temperament, health, confidence and willingness to work. Even with excellent training, many dogs are simply not suited to assistance work, and that is completely normal. For this reason, responsible organisations carefully assess every dog before beginning advanced training.

What we are doing about it

HeartDogs trains Indies - India's native landrace dogs - for both assistance and therapy roles, depending on each dog's temperament and the needs of the people they will support. Every dog undergoes careful assessment before entering advanced training, ensuring that the role matches the dog's natural abilities.

Rather than training dogs in kennels, our programme is built around real homes in rural Karnataka, where women work as paid foster-trainers. This produces confident, well-socialised dogs while creating meaningful livelihoods within the community.

We'll continue sharing what we learn as the programme develops. Subscribe to our newsletter and follow our social channels to stay updated.
